Testing SuperCatch with your club
Thanks for helping. Read this once, top to bottom - it takes about five minutes and it should answer everything you'd otherwise have to ask.
What SuperCatch is
SuperCatch is a fishing app that shows you what the water is doing: sea temperature, chloro (the green, food-rich water), sea height and swell, wind and current. In New Zealand waters it all sits on a marine chart with depths; the sea temperature, chloro and weather also cover Australia and the Pacific from Lord Howe to Fiji, but the chart is New Zealand only. You can log your catches, and each one records the conditions at that spot and moment. It's still being tested - which is where you come in.
What you need
- iPhone: an iPhone 11 or newer, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer), running iOS 26 or later. To check, open Settings > General > About and look at iOS Version.
- If your iPhone is on an older iOS, update it first (Settings > General > Software Update). If you don't, TestFlight will not offer you SuperCatch - and it won't tell you why. Older iPhones that can't take iOS 26 can't run the iPhone app; use the web app below instead.
- Android: there is no Android app. You use the web app in Chrome - it works the same way and you add it to your home screen (steps below).
How to get it
iPhone
- Make sure your iPhone is on iOS 26 or later (see above).
- Install TestFlight from the App Store. It's Apple's free app for trying apps before they're in the App Store.
- Open the TestFlight invite you were sent, accept it, and tap Install next to SuperCatch.
- Open SuperCatch and sign up (below).
Android
- Open Chrome and go to supercatch.co.nz/app.
- Tap Chrome's menu (the three dots, top right) and tap Add to Home screen (on some phones it says Install app). From then on, open SuperCatch from its icon.
- Sign up (below).
Sign up - both phones
- In the app, tap Menu (bottom right) > Settings > Account > Sign Up. Use an email address you can open on your phone and a password of at least 8 characters.
- Open the email we send and tap the link to verify your address.
- Tap Menu > Send feedback and say which club you're with (for example "Mercury Bay club, please switch my plan on"). That tells us who you are.
Your free plan
Your club has been given free Ocean plans - the full app: every sea temperature and chloro layer, fronts, swell, wind, current, the New Zealand chart with depths, the catch log and Crew. You pay nothing, and nothing is charged later. Ocean works in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific from Lord Howe to Fiji; only the chart is New Zealand only - outside New Zealand the map says so. Chloro Day is New Zealand only, and SST Stable stops at 180° - it does not reach the Lau Group.
After you sign up, just wait - we switch it on for you. There is nothing more for you to do. We turn your plan on ourselves, usually within a day. Until then the app shows a plain map and a note saying "The chart, the depth and the coastline come with a plan" - that's expected, nothing is broken. Once your plan is on, close the app fully and open it again.
How to tell us something
Anything wrong, confusing or missing - tell us from inside the app. You don't need to type:
- Tap Menu > Send feedback (the first, blue row).
- Tap the big microphone and say what you want to say. Tap it again when you're done.
- Tap Send.
If you have signal, your words appear in the box as you talk; your voice recording is sent as well either way, so we hear exactly what you said. You can add a screenshot from your Photos if it helps. With no signal it says "Saved on the phone" and sends itself when you're back in range.
What goes with it, automatically: which layer and view you were looking at, the part of the map that was on your screen (its middle and zoom), a picture of the map, your phone and iOS version, the app version, your plan, and your email if you're signed in. It does not send where you are - see Does SuperCatch track me?
If you can't use the app at all, email support@supercatch.co.nz.
Does SuperCatch track me? No.
- Nothing in the app sends where you are on its own, ever. There is no tracking, no live boat dot, and nothing running in the background.
- Send feedback never sends where you are. It sends the part of the map that was on your screen, which is wherever you happened to be looking.
- Crew sends your position only when you press Send my position - once, as a message to your group, and not again unless you press it again.
- A catch you log keeps its spot on your phone. The spot is used once to look up the sea conditions there, and that lookup is not kept. The spot goes into your account only if you turn on Position sharing in Settings, and it is off unless you turn it on.
What we'd like you to try
The layers are along the bottom of the screen: SST, Chloro, Swell, Wind, Current, Menu. The one that's on is the solid blue tile. How it works explains every one in detail.
- The SST tabsTap SST, then the button at the top of the screen to switch between Live (this hour), Day (a 24-hour blend) and Stable (two days old, no gaps).
- ChloroSame three versions: Live, Day and Stable. Green, food-rich water and the edges where it meets clearer water.
- SwellSea height and swell, from two days back to four days ahead.
- WindWind and gusts, now to four days ahead. The pill at the top turns red over 25 knots.
- CurrentSurface current, one picture a day.
- Logging a catchTap + (top right). A marker shows where the catch will go - move the map under it if it should be somewhere else, then tap Drop pin here. Pick the species and tap Save catch. Add a photo or a voice note if you like. Try it with no signal too.
- The crew threadMenu > Crew. Create a group for your boat, or join one with an invite code from a mate, then send a message and try Send my position. It sends where you are once, as a message, only because you pressed it - see Does SuperCatch track me?
- The Day sliderSST > Day. Drag the slider at the bottom, or tap play, to watch the water move hour by hour.
- FRONTSOn SST Day or Stable, or Chloro Day or Stable, tap FRONTS on the right. The pink line marks the fronts - where warm water meets cool on SST, green meets blue on Chloro - the edges fish work.
Tell us what worked, what didn't, and what you expected that wasn't there.
One thing to remember
SuperCatch is for finding fish, not for navigation. Use your chartplotter and proper charts to find your way and stay safe.
